Japan has announced the delivery of approximately 30 light military vehicles to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with six of them already delivered on April 10, 2025.

These vehicles add to a previous shipment of 101 units, including Type 73 models, high-mobility vehicles, and engineering vehicles from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. It is still unclear whether all the new vehicles will be of the same type or if other equipment will also be included.

The vehicles sent are second-generation Mitsubishi Type 73 light trucks, based on the 1996 Mitsubishi Pajero. They feature four-wheel drive, a 125-horsepower turbocharged engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, and can reach speeds of up to 125 km/h, with a payload capacity of 440 kg. They are mainly used as command vehicles but also support anti-tank units, portable missile teams, and special forces. They can be armed with Minimi or Browning 12.7mm machine guns.

In addition to military support, Japan is also offering medical assistance to injured Ukrainian soldiers. In February 2025, it was announced that Ukrainian military personnel would be treated not only at the Central Self-Defense Forces Hospital but also at the hospital of the National Defense Medical College of Japan’s Ministry of Defense, expanding the rehabilitation program.
